EXPEDITION 01 / SCOTLAND / 14 DAYS

A family campervan field guide from Worcestershire to Skye, Torridon and the Highlands — built around wild places, historic sites and the memberships already in your wallet.

01 / MISSION PROFILE
Two-night bases, a weather-flex day on Skye and a gentler west-coast line keep the journey workable with a baby and Percy aboard.
02 / VESSEL DOSSIER
The Nebuchadnezzar is a 2025 Swift Trekker X on the Ford Transit: compact enough for an ordinary category B licence, but capable enough to carry four people into the Highlands—provided the payload is treated as a hard limit.
This Nebuchadnezzar is the eight-speed automatic. Swift’s 2025 sheet lists its payload at 370 kg, compared with 415 kg for the manual. Category B currently covers petrol and diesel vehicles up to 3,500 kg MAM; always check the actual licence entitlement. Swift specification ↗Licence categories ↗
FIELD USE / SET-UP SEQUENCE
Hook-up and water fill sit at the nearside front corner. The cassette hatch and external shower are offside, away from the awning. The clear 4-inch control panel is above the sliding door.
Secure twist-lock closure, dual zipped windows with midge screens and fire-resistant canvas. Pull the canvas clear, lower, lock and physically check it before every departure.
Official 2025 sizes are 1.85 × 1.36 m at the rear and 2.05 × 1.30 m up top. The rear uses clipped side sections and magnetic struts; the roof bed adds a Heki skylight, blind, flyscreen, USB and spotlights.
The gas bottle shut-off is reachable through an internal cupboard, so there is no need to step outside in the rain.
CREW CONFIGURATION
The two forward-facing travel seats include Isofix on the aisle seat. With baby number two the van still has four belted places, but the second child seat must be a compatible belt-fitted model; confirm the seat and installation before travel.
Use the roof bed for the adults. The rear double—or the flat rear deck—takes a travel cot comfortably. Later, it becomes the natural two-up, two-down family-of-four layout.
The flat rear activity area has gear tie-downs and scratch-resistant plank-effect flooring. Anchor a suitable crate or crash-tested harness; Highway Code rule 57 requires dogs to be restrained while travelling. Flyscreens and vented windows help on warm evenings.
Our automatic’s quoted 370 kg payload must absorb passengers, children, Percy, water, options and every bag. That is 45 kg less than the manual, so load exactly as you intend to tour and visit a weighbridge before the first big trip; check both total and axle weights.
The Trekker X Automatic is loaded as the factory baseline. Edit these master values for another campervan and the payload, off-grid, expedition budget and vessel launch tools will immediately use that vehicle instead.
Local master profile: changes are stored only on this device and are never submitted. The factory baseline remains available through the restore button. Always use the figures on your own vehicle plate, handbook and manufacturer specification.
Adjust the crew, liquids and kit actually travelling. The calculation now runs from the shared Swift Trekker X Automatic (2025) profile and its 370 kg user payload.
What the active profile already countedThe Trekker X baseline includes a 75 kg driver, diesel at 90% of a 70 L tank and an 11 kg LPG allowance. The calculator charges only the difference for those items.
Working densities + open capacitiesWater is estimated at 1 kg/L. The active profile supplies fuel density and tank size. The 65 L Trekker fresh tank remains visible as the default reference, but water entries accept larger values for other vans or auxiliary containers. Inputs stay on this device.
Planning aid / not a certificateProduction tolerances, fitted options and axle distribution are not captured here. Confirm the plated limits, actual tank sizes and LPG installation, then use a loaded weighbridge and record both axle weights. Swift MRO notes ↗
Reviewers praise the generous standard driver-assistance package and genuinely superior roof bed. Practical Motorhome named it Best Campervan for Solo Travel in its 2025 awards.
The kitchen aisle is narrow and under-lit. At 2.98 m tall it can feel top-heavy on sharp bends, and the washroom has no roof vent—crack the roof windows when showering so steam can escape.
Motorhome Monkey later included the Trekker X among its 4.5/5 tests. Swift says the active owners’ group, founded in 2024, has grown beyond 400 members—useful real-world backup for roof-canvas and bed-setup questions.
02C / OFF-GRID ENDURANCE CORE
Model parked endurance across battery, solar, fresh water, grey water, cassette capacity and LPG. It currently uses the Swift Trekker X Automatic (2025) master profile; edit that profile once to recalculate for another campervan.
Keep a result, follow the journeys, join the future community or help improve the assumptions with anonymous real-world touring data.
The three community destinations are placeholders for now; they do not collect or transmit anything.
Active master profileThe Trekker X baseline supplies its 100 Ah battery, 12 V system, 110 W solar, 65/55 L tanks, 18 L cassette and 6 kg usable LPG estimate. Edit vehicle profile ↑ Trekker source ↗
How the estimate worksElectric endurance combines the active profile’s battery and voltage with estimated daily solar and other charging. Fresh carried can exceed the profile tank figure for auxiliary containers; grey, cassette and LPG use the shared master capacities, and the shortest duration becomes the headline.
Planning aid / not a promiseShade, cloud, temperature, battery age, appliance duty cycles, heating demand and real behaviour can change the result sharply. Read the control panel, inspect the stores and retain a practical reserve before relying on any remote stop.
02D / EXPEDITION BUDGET CORE
Model fuel, pitches, ferries, food, experiences and contingency in one live plan. The 14-day Scotland circuit and Swift Trekker X Automatic (2025) are loaded as the starting point, but every trip cost remains editable.
Shared vehicle profileThe fuel calculation uses the Trekker X Auto’s editable 28 UK mpg planning economy and 70 L fuel tank. Edit the master profile ↑
Open trip assumptionsThe Scotland figures are a useful starting state, not hard limits. Change the duration, route distance, currency, prices, nights and spending style for any campervan expedition. Currency selection changes labels only; it does not convert entered amounts.
Planning aid / verify real pricesFuel prices, pitches, ferries, tolls and attractions change. Replace the defaults with current quotes and bookings, retain contingency, and treat the result as a planning estimate rather than financial advice.
02E / VESSEL LAUNCH SEQUENCE
Run a physical departure check that understands the active campervan profile. The Trekker X roof, awning, powered step, hook-up, LPG and cassette checks are armed by default; other owners can disable equipment, mark individual checks not applicable and add their own procedures.
Profile-driven applicabilityDeparture-equipment switches in Vehicle Master Core ↑ automatically remove unavailable roof, awning, step, hook-up, LPG and cassette tasks from the score. Any individual check can also be marked N/A.
How launch authority worksAny open critical check produces HOLD. Once critical blockers are complete, remaining advisory checks produce CAUTION. CLEAR TO LAUNCH appears only when every applicable check has been physically completed.
Physical check / not a roadworthiness certificateNever tick from memory or merely to improve the score. Walk to the item, inspect it and follow the vehicle, equipment and child-restraint manuals. This tool cannot detect faults, loading, tyre pressure or unsafe maintenance.
02F / EXPEDITION LOADOUT CORE
Generate a first-timer-friendly manifest from trip length, crew, laundry and shopping cadence. It starts with the 14-day Scotland circuit, two adults, one baby and Percy, but every trip input, recommended quantity and working weight can be changed for another crew or campervan.
A compact rolling food load protects fridge space and payload while keeping one simple emergency meal in reserve.
FIRST-TRIP RULE: Do not fill every cupboard before learning how the van works. Keep one easy meal per person, buy heavy drinks near use and make the first top-up a deliberate chance to remove what is not earning its space.
Open each category, tick items only when physically packed, mark anything unsuitable as not needed, and replace every working weight with the figure from your own product or scales.
Building recommendations…
New and empty campervanThe “empty-van first load” filter surfaces permanent basics such as the kettle, hook-up cable, food-grade water hose, levelling ramps, toilet supplies, bedding, cookware, first-aid kit and cleaning equipment. Confirm what the dealer already supplied before buying duplicates.
Payload connectionThe manifest excludes people, diesel, LPG and fresh/waste tank water. Its payload comparison reads those live assumptions from Payload Core ↑, and “Send weights” replaces that calculator’s gear, food, drink and baby-supply entries with this manifest.
Working weights / verify physicallyProduct weights, packaging and quantities vary greatly. This is a planning aid, not a loading certificate. Weigh heavy items, keep mass low and between the axles, respect individual axle limits and complete a fully loaded weighbridge check before the first major trip.
03 / JOURNEY LOG
The route reaches Skye by ferry, crosses the north-west Highlands without attempting the full NC500, then returns by Inverness, the A9 and Moffat.
04 / OPERATIONS BRIEFING
Treat the ferry and the busiest club sites as fixed points. Everything scenic around them can flex with weather, naps and the pace of the crew.
Enter the camper’s exact dimensions when booking: 5.98 m long × 2.98 m high, plus anything fitted outside that envelope. Add Percy under the operator’s pet-travel options and check the sailing again close to travel.
BOOKING SEQUENCE
VEHICLE PROFILE
Use campsite directions rather than blindly following the sat-nav on final approaches.
CREW RHYTHM
The best days leave room for feeds, dog breaks, weather changes and unplanned viewpoints. Skye day 8 is intentionally unscheduled — protect it.
The lower route through Lochcarron and Shieldaig still delivers an exceptional Torridon approach.
05 / UK ACCESS STACK
This is the permanent all-UK flexibility layer—not just a Scottish holiday list. Together, the seven memberships cover heritage, gardens, wildlife, forests and overnight bases. Carry physical cards; reciprocal admission, booking and parking rules still vary by organisation and property.
06 / EXPEDITION TOOLKIT
The installed app deck is broad enough to cross-check pitches, navigation and live conditions. Use it as a layered toolkit—not as permission to ignore campsite arrival instructions, signs or local access rules.
Full UK and EU cover, with full UK and EU breakdown assistance—as recorded from your policy information.
A useful extra layer for Percy: Woodland Trust woods are free to visit, and its directory can surface short decompression walks around transit days.
07 / DEPARTURE CHECK
A short final check now prevents the unglamorous problems from hijacking the first few days.
